Sago Khichdi Recipe: A Comforting and Nutritious Tapioca Dish

Sago Khichdi


  • 1 cup sago (tapioca pearls)
  • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1/2 cup roasted peanuts, coarsely ground
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped (as per taste)
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp grated ginger
  • a pinch of asafoetida
  • 1 tbsp ghee or oil
  • Fresh coriander, chopped, for garnish
  • lemon juice, to taste
  • salt to taste


Prepare Sabudana:

Wash the sago thoroughly under running water till the water runs clear. Soak the sago in enough water for about 3-4 hours or till they become soft. Remove the water completely.

Inflate the Sabudana:

After soaking, separate the pearls by expanding the sago slowly with the help of a fork. Cancel.

Sauté Aromatics:

Heat ghee or oil in a pan on medium heat. Add cumin and let it crackle.

Add grated ginger, chopped green chilies, and a pinch of asafoetida to it. Fry for a minute till the aroma comes.

Add Potatoes:

Add the chopped potatoes to the pan and fry them till they are fully cooked and light golden brown.

Mix Sabudana:

Put the soaked puffed sago in the pan. Mix well with potatoes and spices.

Cooking Sago:

Cook the sago mixture on a slow flame, while stirring occasionally to prevent sticking, till the sago pearls become translucent and soft. This should take about 5-7 minutes.

Add Peanuts:

Add coarsely ground roasted peanuts to the pan. Mix well to incorporate the peanuts into the sago mixture.

Season and Garnish:

Put salt and lemon juice in Sabudana Khichdi. Mix well to distribute the flavor evenly.

Serve hot:

Once the sago becomes soft and the flavors meld well, switch off the flame.

Garnish Sabudana Khichdi with freshly chopped coriander.

To test whether the sago is wet enough, press a pearl between your fingers. It should be easily mashed without any resistance.

Adjust the amount of green chilies and lemon juice as per your spice preference.
