  • 3/4 cup toor dal
  • 1 cup rice (preferably Sona Masuri)
  • 10 nos beans
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 Kohlrabi/Nolkol/Navilkosu or Cabbage/Cauliflower
  • 1 small eggplant (optional)
  • 1/2 bell pepper (optional)
  • 1 potato
  • 2 tbsp soaked peanuts
  • 2 tbsp soaked green peas
  • 2 medium-sized tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 small gooseberry-sized tamarind
  • 1 small lemon-sized jaggery
  • salt as per your taste

Ingredients for Homemade Spice Powder:

  • 2-4 red chilies
  • 1 tsp chana dal
  • 2 tbsp urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 2 tsp coriander seeds
  • a pinch of asafoetida
  • 1/2 inch cinnamon stick
  • 10 cloves
  • 1 cardamom
  • 1 tsp poppy seeds
  • 2 tbsp dry coconut or grated coconut
  • 1/2 tsp cooking oil

Instructions for making Bisi Bele Bath:

  • First, wash the toor dal in a pressure cooker. Add 2 cups of water, a pinch of turmeric powder, and a few drops of oil. Pressure cook the dal for about 2 whistles, making sure it is half cooked.

Meanwhile, cut and prepare all the vegetables. Wash rice, peanuts, and green peas in a separate container and keep them aside.

  • When the dal is half cooked, add chopped vegetables, washed rice, green peas, and ground nuts to the same pressure cooker. Add 4 cups of water and one teaspoon of salt. Pressure cook for an additional 2 whistles to cook the vegetables and rice well.
  • While the cooker is on, prepare the homemade spice powders. Heat half a teaspoon of oil in a pan on medium heat. – Add red chilies and fry till roasted. Then put chana dal and urad dal in it and fry till lightly roasted.
  • Next, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, and coriander seeds. Fry for a few seconds before adding cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and asafoetida. Continue to fry for a few more seconds, careful not to burn the spices.
  • Switch off the flame and let the roasted spices cool down. When it cools down, put them in a mixer jar and grind them finely. Add the grated coconut to a mixie jar and grind again till it is well mixed. Your homemade spice powder is now ready to use.
  • Prepare tempering in a separate frying pan or pan. Heat 6 teaspoons of ghee or cooking oil and add mustard seeds, chana dal, urad dal, and cashews. When the dal turns brown, add turmeric powder and curry leaves to it. Switch off the flame and immediately add the ground spice powder and mix it well.
  • Add salt, jaggery, and tamarind extract to the mixture. Open the pressure cooker when the pressure reduces and you will see that the rice, dal, and vegetables are cooked well.
  • Mix the tempering spices with cooked rice, lentils, and vegetables. Add about 4 cups of water to get the right consistency. The consistency of Bisi Bele Bath should be thin, so adjust the water accordingly.
  • Switch on the stove and bring the mixture to a boil while stirring continuously. Finally, add a teaspoon of ghee to enhance the taste.
  • As the name suggests, serve Bisi Bele Bath hot. It goes well with raita, papad, chips, kara boondi, or a mix. Enjoy the delicious taste of this traditional South Indian dish.
