General Tso’s Chicken
Component:
For the Chicken:
500 grams boneless chicken cut into pieces
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
2 eggs, beaten
oil for frying
For Chutney:
3 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp rice vinegar
2 tbsp hoisin sauce
2 tbsp honey
1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tsp sesame oil
add 1/2 tsp red chili
1/2 cup chicken broth
For the Stir-Fry:
2 tbsp oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp ginger, grated
1/4 cup green onions, chopped (optional)
Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
Instruction General Tso’s Chicken:
- Combine cornstarch, flour, salt and pepper in a mixing bowl. Dip each piece of chicken in the beaten egg and then coat it in the cornstarch mixture.
- Heat the oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat. Fry the coated chicken pieces in batches till they are golden brown and crispy. Remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel lined plate to drain excess oil.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, honey, cornstarch, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, and chicken broth to make the sauce.
- In another pan or wok, heat the oil on medium heat. Add minced garlic and grated ginger and fry for a minute till fragrant.
- Pour the sauce mixture into the pan and cook until it becomes thick and glossy.
- Add the fried chicken pieces to the sauce and fry for a few minutes until the chicken is well coated with the sauce.
- Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.
- Serve General Tso’s Chicken hot with steamed rice or noodles.
